Health Care in the Laurentians Region
There is an extensive network of health care institutions, other facilities, family medical groups, independent medical clinics and practitioners, as well as a broad range of community-based organizations that provide services related to health care. Many have strong links to the communities they serve.
Within the last few years, the number of institutions has dropped, due to amalgamations and fusions intended to better integrate services, avoid duplication and improve efficiency.
Services in the Laurentians region are coordinated by the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux des Laurentides (Health and Social Services Agency) located at 1000 rue Labelle, bureau 210, Saint-Jérôme (Québec) J7Z 5N6; Telephone: (450) 436-8622; Fax: (450) 432-8712; E-mail: information.rr15@ssss.gouv.qc.ca. This Agency is essentially responsible for the improvement of the health and welfare of Laurentians’ residents by establishing that the required health and social services are made available in the region.
Territorial Mandate
The region is divided into seven territories, each served by a Centre de services de santé et de services sociaux (CSSS) (Health and Social Services Centre), which is intended as the primary point of entry to the health care network. These seven are:

Info-Santé 8-1-1
Since May 20, 2008, a single three-digit phone number, 8-1-1, is all you need to reach Info-Santé. This easy-to-remember number can be dialled from anywhere in Québec, except in the far north. Info-Santé 8-1-1 allows you to reach a health care professional easily for non-urgent cases. Info-Santé is a major part of first-line health care in Québec. It provides answers to certain common health questions and directs users to the right type of health or social services.
This service is not a replacement for those provided by health and social services centres and family medical groups, who provide true patient management beyond immediate problems. Also, in an emergency, you should go to a hospital emergency room or call the 9-1-1 emergency number to get help.
Dialling 8-1-1 will connect you to one of the 15 Info-Santé call centres. These call centres are connected to each other so that, if there is an overflow in one centre, calls will be transferred to another. This will help to reduce wait times. Increased use of Info-Santé will be beneficial for the population, health care workers, and the whole health system.
